WiFi for motorhomes is becoming more and more popular, as people become evermore reliant on the internet. Streaming, working remotely and scrolling social media are just a few of the many reasons that people can’t go without their WiFi!
However, trying to decide which motorhome WiFi solution is best for you can be difficult! Thankfully, here at Caravan Tech, we’ve created a handy guide to help you pick the best WiFi for your motorhome.
There are many different WiFi options for motorhomes, caravans and campervans, so it’s important to choose the one that meets your needs!
Campsite WiFi is simply the WiFi that is provided by your campsite. Its quality varies hugely from site to site, with some sites not even offering WiFi at all, but is great as it requires no installation or setup from you. Campsite WiFi may be available for free, or it can require a payment. Additionally, there may be signal across the entire site, or it can be restricted to just a small area, such as the reception block. During peak times, when the WiFi is being shared with lots of users, the reliability of the WiFi can drop significantly. There may also be restrictions of the number of devices that can be used per caravan, limiting access. Due to the varied nature of campsite WiFi, it can be hard to really judge how good the signal and quality will be, without taking the leap and visiting the campsite.
Hot Spotting is when you share your smartphone’s data to other devices, which is a great way to get fast speeds in areas with good coverage. This is a good option for a quick fix, but there is potential to use up a lot of your data. For example, Netflix’s maximum data setting will provide the highest quality video, but can use over 1GB of data per 20 minutes of streaming. Hot Spotting can lead to additional charges on your phone bill if you go over your data limit, so this option may be best for those on unlimited data plans.
MiFi is a portable, rechargeable or battery-powered wireless device that acts as a mini broadband hotspot. Dependent on your choice of MiFi device, they can let you connect up to 10 devices on a single hotspot. However, these devices can be very slow, especially if multiple devices are being used at once. The limited battery life can also be an issue for those who are reliant on constant use of their WiFi. Coverage of MiFi devices also varies; it can often be limited in areas with poor reception.
Caravan WiFi systems connect to local networks and then amplify this signal to connected devices. It is the fastest and most reliable method out of the four, and only requires use of data if there is no free WiFi available. It does have a higher upfront cost than the other methods, but this is a one-time cost, and is often worth paying for the quality of WiFi that is received.

Yes, your smartphone can act as a mobile hotspot, but this depends on your signal strength and data allowance. For more reliable connectivity, many motorhomers opt for dedicated mobile routers.
For light use like browsing or email, 10–20GB per month is enough. For regular streaming, video calls, or remote work, you may need 50–100GB or an unlimited plan.
Not always. Your signal depends on your location and the mobile network’s coverage. Rural or remote areas may have weak or no signal, so consider a signal booster or satellite system for better coverage.
Yes, if your data SIM supports EU roaming, your WiFi system should work abroad. Just watch for fair usage limits or additional roaming charges depending on your plan.
A booster amplifies weak mobile signals, improving your chances of getting online in remote or low-signal areas. They’re ideal for full-time touring or those who rely on mobile data.
